Application Process

When students approach the Fund about the scholarship we ask them to apply direct to a University. These students then go through the applications procedure for the University course. Once they are accepted onto the course they may at this stage be eligible for a scholarship. For a list of eligible countries, click here.

The University forwards 4 or 5 applications and CV's to the Marshal Papworth Scholarship Committee which must be must be received by the Committee no later than the end of the second week of April or the last day before the Easter break, whichever is the former. This is to ensure that the students who are awarded a scholarship have ample time to arrange Visa's and travel arrangements before the start of their course in the Autumn.

Applications and CV's are then considered by the Committee and scholarships awarded to the students.

We ask that the students have not received any other scholarship before and that they and their home country will definitely benefit from the student being awarded a scholarship.

Students

Our prime concern is to identify students who will return to their home Country after their year of study, and use their knowledge for the benefit of their Countrymen. As the courses are taught in English, a reasonable command of the English Language is important, although I understand the Universities/ Colleges offer induction courses to help students in this area.

When the students arrive at University they will receive a welcome pack from the Fund which will give them a background to the Fund and also the East of England Agricultural Society who administer the Fund. The welcome pack will include details of what is expected of them with regards to reports and attending events.

During their time at University the students are asked to write a report at the end of every semester and the students must also attend the Friday of the East of England Country Show where they will be presented with a certificate and also have the opportunity to be involved with one of the aspects of the Show, which may be stewarding an event or area.

There is an open evening in September which includes a final debrief with the Committee before the students give a short presentation about their course and their time here to members of the Society.

During their stay, students will be visited twice by a member of the committee. These visits will entail talking to the students about how their course is going, how they have settled in and whether they have any concerns. The committee member will also meet student course tutors with visits usually taking place in November and March of the academic year.

Value of Scholarships

Scholarships vary from £12 - £17k and are designed to fund the majority of tuition fees, living expenses and travel costs. We usually seek some contribution from either the student or another supporting organisation. Scholarship monies are paid to the University/College in three installments - normally at the beginning of each semester.

Universities / Colleges & Courses

As an Agricultural Charity, we tend to favour land based postgraduate courses, including Sustainable Development, Waste Management, International Horticulture, but will consider more general courses such as Project Management and Economic Development.

The Scholarship provides education for a 1-year course. We therefore award Scholarships for a postgraduate course such as a MSc or MA as these are traditionally 1 year in length.

We expect the students to gain acceptance on a suitable course - click here for a list of Universities/Colleges that we are currently working with. The contacts listed are fully aware of the Marshal Papworth Scholarship.
