Winter Warmer Soup Challenge
The Kids Country team were delighted to bring back the Winter Warmer Soup Challenge to our busy programme of events this year, designed to promote an understanding of the provenance of our food.
All of the children involved enjoyed the opportunity to explore foods that have been farmed locally, caught or grown at home, and develop their culinary and nutritional awareness from Farm to Fork.
For the first round, children were asked to send in a written recipe for a soup, using local ingredients, and demonstrating which sections of the Eatwell Guide were included in their recipe. The top eight were then invited to the Showground to cook their soup for a panel of judges, and present a table-top display alongside their culinary creation. For the final, the top three have been invited to showcase their soups at Asda Peterborough, and ask shoppers to taste the soups and vote on their favourite.
The winning school was Tydd St Mary Primary School, receiving £200 of school equipment, a trip to a local farm, and a trophy. The runners-up, Orton Wistow Primary School and Hose Primary School, are also set to enjoy a trip to a farm for their efforts.
Sandra Lauridsen, Education Manager for Kids Country said: “With cooking becoming a more important part of the curriculum, we wanted to run an event that made children think about where their food came from, and then turn their hand to creating a delicious recipe from scratch. We were very impressed with the standard of all the entries, and look forward to announcing our winner in December. Well done to all the schools who entered.”
