‘The Carbon Conversation’ is the first event in our new multi-event format of ‘The Shuttleworth Series’. In our first event, we look forward to being joined by a range of speakers sharing their approaches and journey to date towards low-carbon agriculture as well as the highs and lows of the current carbon schemes.
Now time to find out a little more about our speakers… we will be joined by…
Thomas Gent
Thomas Gent lives and works on his family arable farm on the Lincolnshire/Cambridge border. They have been farming using regenerative farming techniques for 13 years. Thomas’s farm was one of the first farms in the UK to join the Agreena Carbon program. He found working with Agreena exciting and now works with Agreena as UK Country Manager and Head of Certificates.
Peter Allen
Peter is a farmer and contractor covering approximately 1400 Ha of arable cropping in Herts and Beds. He is also sitting on the NFU Mutual Advisory Board. A tenant of the Shuttleworth Estate for the last 20 years, where along with other ground he started direct drilling 6 years ago on soil types that vary from shallow soils over gravel, chalk, sand to clay, often having more than one soil type in the same field. He still farms some land in what would be considered a conventional method which gives Peter a good comparison between the different systems. They say every day is a school day and when you change from a well-tried and tested farming system, there are many new challenges along the way and he is sure there are still more to come.
Tim Field
Tim Field founded Carbon Quester with the Rothamsted Research Institute in 2020 to develop an affordable, accurate soil carbon testing methodology. By applying Rothamsted’s world-leading carbon sequestration research, Carbon Quester aims to become the UK’s most trusted soil carbon trading platform. Since 2021 Tim has also been facilitating the new Farmer Cluster in the North East Cotswolds, which includes 75,000 acres across 85 farms. He is also the founder and board member of the Agricology project, a knowledge exchange platform to disseminate best practices and research on practical, sustainable farming. He has sat on the Organic Trade Board as a non-exec director and advised on a range of sustainable agriculture activities including the Sustainable Food Trust’s Global Farm Metric project, the APPG on Agroecology and previously sat on the National Pollinator Strategy working group. With a background in environmental sciences and training in rural surveying, Tim has twenty years of experience in environmental and infrastructure management of farms, estates, and throughout the food supply chain.
