St Gilberts children discover ‘field to fork’ with Kids Country
Over 200 children from St Gilberts C E Primary School, Stamford, had a visit from Kids Country as they delivered their ‘Breakfast Week’ event – a unique and hands-on day to help Key Stage 1 and 2 children understand the ‘field to fork’ process.
The Breakfast Week events, which were organised and delivered in school by the East of England Agricultural Society’s education arm, Kids Country, saw children making and tasting pancakes with produce donated by Marriages Flour and Central England Co-operative, and taste test rare breed pork sausages from Bedfordshire pig farmer, Thomas Beazley with Ladies in Pigs explaining how sausages are made and how pigs are reared in the UK.

Farmer Luke Abblitt also showed children what cereal crops can be grown in a metre-square of soil before children got up close and personal with a giant blue New Holland tractor from Cambridgeshire tractor dealership, G & J Peck Ltd. The team from Central England Co-operative also walked children through their ‘Healthy Choices’ food wheel. Volunteers from BGL Group, Peterborough, were on hand to help children in the pancake zone.
Victoria Berry, Key Stage 2 teacher at St Gilberts C E Primary School, Stamford, said: “I just wanted to pass thanks from the whole of our teaching team and children for such a brilliant, well organised, and informative day yesterday.”
Sandra Lauridsen, Kids Country education manager, says: “It was great to deliver this event face-to-face with so many children – nothing beats this kind of learning, touching and feeling with your hands, and seeing with your own eyes, as well as speaking to the producers who deliver this food for us.”

Sandra continued: “We are really looking forward to delivering more events to primary schools in 2022, especially our Food and Farming Day on Friday 1st July, which we have had to run as a virtual event for the last two years with over 2,000 school children already signed up to attend at the usual venue, the East of England Showground.”
